Understanding and Managing Heel Pain

Heel pain is a common complaint that can affect people of all ages, often making walking or standing uncomfortable. The most frequent cause is plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the tissue that connects the heel to the toes. Other causes include Achilles tendonitis, heel spurs, or bursitis.

Heel pain typically develops from overuse, improper footwear, or prolonged standing. Runners, people who are overweight, or those with flat feet are especially prone to it. Symptoms may include sharp pain when first stepping out of bed or after long periods of rest.

Treatment often starts with rest, ice, stretching exercises, and supportive shoes or orthotics. In more persistent cases, physical therapy, injections, or other interventions may be needed.

Ignoring heel pain can lead to chronic issues, so early action is key. If pain lasts more than a few weeks, consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and care.
