Bunion pain occurs due to a condition called “hallux valgus.” A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, causing it to deviate outward toward the other toes. This misalignment of the big toe joint can lead to several factors contributing to pain:
- Inflammation: The bunion often becomes inflamed due to friction and pressure from shoes or excessive standing and walking. This inflammation can cause pain, redness, and swelling around the affected area.
- Pressure on the Joint: The misaligned big toe joint can experience increased pressure and stress when walking, making it painful, especially when bearing weight.
- Footwear: Tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes can exacerbate the condition by squeezing the toes and putting extra pressure on the bunion. This can result in increased pain and discomfort.
- Joint Arthritis: Over time, the misalignment can lead to joint arthritis in the big toe, causing additional pain and stiffness.
- Nerve Irritation: The bunion can press against nearby nerves, causing tingling, numbness, or shooting pain in the affected area.
While bunion pain can be managed with conservative measures like changing footwear, using orthotic inserts, and applying ice or anti-inflammatory medications, severe or persistent pain may require medical intervention, including surgery, to realign the toe joint and alleviate discomfort
